Are You Brushing Enough this Holiday?

The time of year has come to head out to those fun Christmas parties.  The winter has come and the time to be together is really reaching its peak.  It is really starting to feel like Christmas and that is because many people are starting to get together and enjoy each other's company again.  It is a time for fun, laughter, and serious reflection on the year.  But it is also a time for amazing food and drinks.  There is nothing better than some mashed potatoes and chocolate-covered pretzels along with a nice sugary cider.  This is how most Americans feel about this time of year and it has led to a whole lot of overeating and even lots of dental damage.  The fact is that we all indulge a little more than normal and that ends up being a little hard on teeth. So that really does bring the question about are we brushing enough and is there something more we could do during this time of year to keep our dental health top notch.

The major issue with all of the holidays when it comes to dental health is basically all based upon diet.  If you are eating a lot of really bad food and drinking a lot of sugary and highly acidic drinks than your teeth are going to be part of your body that pays the price.  This is simply because those are the things that actually harm your teeth.  They slowly erode your tooth enamel and cause plauqe buildup.  Then after that the tartar begins and the yellowing turns into massive tooth decay.  We have seen it year in and year out and that is why cavities seem to happen during this time of year and it is simply because we are not paying attention to our diet.  So the best thing that we all can do is simply be wise on the amount of food and drink we indulge in.  I am not saying don't eat the good stuff on Christmas or Thanksgiving, but this is a good time to eat and drink in moderation for your teeths sake.

I am also a proponant of making sure all dental brushing schedules and habits are in place and being followed through with.  Normally, we all brush our teeth twice a day, but this month many people forget or simply think its ok to let one slide or a day or two slide.  But those days are generally after a holiday party and your teeth are being attacked the whole time.  That is why it is important to make sure you are keeping up with your schedule.

One way that I make sure I am keeping up with my teeth is that I set alarms this entire month on my phone to remind me to brush my teeth.  They are not crazy wild, but they remind me that in the morning and at night I am supposed to give my teeth a good brushing and protect them for the next leg of the day or night. So having an alarm on your phone is an amazing reminder and a great way to solidify a good habit of brushing.  I also like to use a whitening toohtpaste during this time of year because it allows me to keep a brighter smile for all those holiday pictures.
